If all the lights of downtown Osaka get too much, head to Shitennoji Temple, the oldest temple in Japan. It’s very well known Buddhist temple with a nice little garden, treasure house and plenty of temple buildings to have a look around in.

  • For a wider selection of shrines and temples, go to nearby Kyoto or Nara.
  • Come here if you are in Osaka for New Year’s.

How to get there

Take Exit 4 from Shitennojimae Yuhigaoka station on the Tanimachi line (Osaka Subway).

From Nanba station (Osaka), take the Sennichimae line (Osaka Subway) to Tanimachi Kyuchome station, then the Tanimachi line (Osaka Subway) to Shitennojimae Yuhigaoka station (11 mins, 200 yen).

From Umeda station (Osaka), walk to Higashi-Umeda station, then take the Tanimachi line (Osaka Subway) to Shitennojimae Yuhigaoka station (12 mins, 230 yen).
