Seishun 18: Cheap Nation-wide ticket

seishun18_tn

While the Japan Rail Pass is more popular, the Seishun 18 pass can offer much better value for money if you don’t mind longer journey times.  It provides 5 days of unlimited travel anywhere in Japan on local and rapid JR trains (the national rail companies).

What does it cost?

11,500 yen (2300 per day).

When can I use it?

July 20 to September 10 (on sale until August 31)

Check the Official Website for updates.

Is it worth it?

While it may not allow use of the Shinkansen, if you are not traveling too far from your start point, this can be a great deal.  If for example, you want to travel from north to south Japan using the Seishun 18, you will probably be spending all your time in slow trains.  On the other hand, if you enjoy a relaxing train ride and want to go to lots of places in a few prefectures this is a great deal.  We recommend planning the train times before with Jorudan.com.

What are the rules?

  • Not valid on Shinkansen (bullet) or Limited Express trains
  • Does not have to be used 5 days in a row, can be split up between days.
  • Can be used by multiple people.
  • Can be used on the JR West Miyajima Ferry.

Where can I buy it?

You can buy it at the ticket office of any JR station, for example in Shinjuku or Shibuya.
